The end of the semester is always a bittersweet time. Classes are mercifully over, but your time with your friends is over. At LCM, we acknowledge the end of the semester with a Farewell and Godspeed ceremony at both the last Wednesday night meal before exams, and the final Sunday worship service before exams. Over the last three years, these events had been a time for me to say goodbye and congratulate the graduating seniors. This year it was different for me, as I was the one graduating. The last Wednesday night of the semester, we enjoyed a home-cooked meal from Libby Hoyle, then partook in a Eucharist service. When all that was over, Pastor Chris called each graduating senior into the center of the group, and everyone placed their hands on the seniors while PC gave a blessing. At the final Sunday worship service, the LCM Praise Band and Handbell Choir assisted in worship, which was very nice. My parents were in the congregation, along with the families of a few other graduating seniors. After Holy Communion, PC called all the seniors up to the front of the congregation, where we introduced ourselves, told our future plans, and what has meant the most to us as a part of LCM over the last few years. We received another blessing, then there was a congregational luncheon. I found both the Wednesday night and Sunday morning ceremonies to be very meaningful and uplifting, and I know that going forward I have the support of Pastor Chris, my fellow students, and the congregation of University Lutheran. Kevin Lybrand We had the LCM end of the year party last weekend on Saturday April 27th. We had originally planned to have the celebration at Y beach, but because of the rain we had to move the festivities to the church. Even though it was a dreary and rainy day we still had so much fun! This year we decided to mix it up and have a fish fry. The food was delicious - fried catfish, hush puppies, slaw, potato salad, and chips. Yum! At the end of a very eventful and stressful year, it is always so nice to get together with good friends and spend some time relaxing before the week of final exams. People stood around and talked, caught up, and even met new friends. Although it was really rainy, we still went outside and played games, and also we played games inside: like Catchphrase, Taboo, and all kinds of card games. As we were getting ready to be cooped up in the lounge, the library, or our apartments studying for finals, it was great to get together and appreciate the friendships we have made - whether in the past few weeks, or friendships from the past couple of years. It is these stressful times when we need friends the most, so the end of the year party could not have come at a better time! Ansley Harmon Intramurals are always a fun way to take a break with your friends. There’s nothing quite as fun as sweat rolling down your cheek with your best friends. We in LCM are very athletic and participate in a variety intramural sports. In the fall, we had an ultimate Frisbee team and a flag football team.
In our inaugural football season, the “LCM Stealth Bombers”, playing in the shadow of Death Valley, went 0-4. While our record wasn’t the greatest we certainly had lots of fun the in process. Our favorite play was the so-called “Boyd-Nuke-switcherooni-fake-run-pass.” Many of you may remember a similar play during a two-point conversion in the second half of the CU-GA Tech game. It always provided lots of yards and dumbfounded the opposing team. As for Ultimate, we represented very well with an even record of 2-2. In the spring we participated in basketball and softball. I captained the co-rec basketball team and when trying to come up with a creative name, I heard the Trace Adkins song, “Honky-Tonk ba Donk-a-Donk.” So with a little thinking I named our team the “Ba Dunk a Dunks.” Creative, right? The name always got a good response from the officials and other players. Needless to say, we slammed many a dunk over the course of the season. Unfortunately for our softball team, Mother Nature always had the final say in our games. Many were cold and the closer, against archrival “Romping Rhinos,” was rained out twice. However, even through cold and rain, LCM’ers persevere and always make a positive outcome out of most any situation. Allen Solomons During the second weekend in April, the LCM’s fine leaders of the past year and the year to come went on a retreat to Camp Kinard in Leesville/Batesburg. The retreat consisted primarily of discussion, but we also had our time to play as well. The team reflected on the past year’s events to close this year’s chapter. Each team leader discussed members of LCM that they would like to be involved on their respective teams. We began to look forward to the future and the school year that is seemingly already looming upon us. One major decision that the group had to make was whether or not to change to term period for the leadership team members. Collectively, we came to the conclusion that it would be more conducive for LCM as a whole if we changed the terms to follow the calendar year rather than the school calendar. This means that the leadership team that we just chose will only serve in the fall and then a new leadership team will be selected to begin in January. This will help leadership teams be more prepared for the August events right when school starts, rather than throwing all the back to school events at the new leaders. In between discussions, the group was led by Elliot Cox, through the Group Interaction Course at Camp Kinard. During each challenge, it was all giggles and fun, but it was an important part of the weekend. Going through the GIC together was essential to our skills working together, it helped each of us realize our strengths and weaknesses, and taught us different ways to support each other. To top the weekend off, we got to have a delicious meal at Shealy’s BBQ. On the evening of April 6, several LCMers packed up the van and went to the Pickens/Greenville Raceway. We picked up some KFC buckets of fried chicken and a couple boxes of biscuits on the way – the perfect racing food! This meal was particularly exciting for Callie, since she had never eaten chicken out of a bucket before. We were super excited to share this experience with her. Before the first race started, we were able to walk down onto the track and meet the drivers, look at the cars, etc. While PC was evaluating the cars and their motors and all of that, the girls were picking out their favorite driver. Unfortunately, the driver we picked did not win, but we still had a lot of fun cheering on the other drivers, too. There were 150 laps in the first race, so we had a lot of time to cheer. There were two races following the first one, but they were much shorter and had fewer cars. The whole race outing was so much fun!! We had a great turnout which made it even better. It was a super fun night of racing, fried chicken, and fellowship. Really, can you ask for much more? Gina Wessinger |
