Over New Year’s, a group of students from LCM went to Chicago to meet other Lutheran students from all over the country. Some of us went up a day early to explore the windy (and very cold) city. We spent the day eating deep dish pizza, exploring the waterfront, and walking around downtown. On Wednesday morning, some of us went to the Art Institute and some others went to the Museum of Science and Industry.
On Wednesday, the gathering officially began at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. We opened with some ice breakers and had the opportunity to hear Dr. Ray Pickett, a professor at the seminary speak to us. On Thursday, the workshops began. We talked about everything from the structure of the Lutheran Student Movement on a national level to using social media with campus ministries (check out Tiny Piano Club on YouTube- it is based at LCM- University of Colorado). Of course on Thursday, we also made time to watch the Tigers beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Friday was our service day. We arrived at the veteran’s center not really knowing what to expect, but we helped to clean the center up. It was truly incredible to have the opportunity to work with those who have served our country and to see the services that this center provided- from clothes to meals to a warm place to spend cold days in Chicago. On Saturday, it was time to travel back to warm and sunny South Carolina, but I know I was able to learn and grow so much while I was in Chicago. This gathering with other campus ministry groups allowed me to grow not only my faith, but also to view other experiences- those that I might not have been able to learn about living in South Carolina all 18 years of my life. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to spend a few days in Chicago, learning so much from campus ministries all over the country. Madison Herin This year’s LCM Christmas Party in the Fellowship Hall was a lot of fun. It was a nice reprieve from studying before the start of finals week. Many LCM students attended the event to share holiday foods, play fun Christmas games, and enjoy the end of the year party. Social events like these always help our LCM community grow stronger. We played games including holiday bingo and musical chairs. The gift exchange was also very exciting. I always look forward to fun events like these throughout the year. It’s nice to take a break from my studies, and share in the rewarding fellowship that Lutheran Campus Ministry provides.
