On a cool October weekend, a daring group of LCM students journeyed 300 miles northward to the campus of Virginia Tech, for the Campus Ministry Region 9 Retreat. There they met the LCM groups of many other schools around the region. They all participated in workshops that included a discussion on mental health and faith, service projects such as painting hope globes and making cards for veterans and seniors, and a talk on music in worship. The group also enjoyed boolin’ on Virginia Tech’s campus, playing sports, and exploring the nearby area. Worship services and meals with the entire LCM community of Region 9 were enjoyed by all as well.
-Rebecca Suhr Several times throughout the semester, the University Lutheran Church and Lutheran Campus Ministry gather together after the 11 am service to enjoy a delicious lunch and to listen to a special speaker. This semester we heard Reverend Thulie Beresford, Dr. Edwin Sabuhoro, and Dr. Richard Blob. Each one shared their lives’ professional and personal journeys along with how they continued to grow their faith. We look forward to next semester speakers!
-Mariah Swygert As classes concluded at Clemson and the weather outside grew cold and gray, LCM students gathered at University Lutheran for holiday cheer. At the LCM Christmas party we shared snacks and made “stockings” to be filled at the congregation Christmas party. We also exchanged white elephant gifts and played musical chairs, crowning a new winner for the year. To wrap up the evening we made surgical caps as a service project while watching The Grinch. We all enjoyed the chance to unwind after a stressful week and to enjoy fellowship with each other while celebrating Christmas.
-Tom Birdsong LCM took another Fall Retreat to Camp Chatuga this past semester, and we had lots of fun! The weekend's activities included basketball, soccer, watching the Clemson vs. Syracuse football game, a trip to King's Creek Falls for a hike, and the legendary Chatugaball. We lit a bonfire after the game and cooked some smores, and also had a great time reflecting on the peace and quiet of the weekend and engaging in Bible studies. All ten of us in attendance had a lot of fun, and we can't wait to do it again!
-Zach Lindler Sunday October 27th, 2019 we had our annual hayride at Rick and Cindy Sanders' farm. We dined on burgers and hotdogs and many many delicious desserts. Spikeball and cornhoe were the games of choice of this event. Everybody enjoyed the actual hayride itself. It was great to see more of the congregation outside of church.
-David Cook Every Monday night, a handful of students come together in the LCM lounge to be as spontaneous as possible. Throughout this semester, our activities have ranged from chocolate milk tasting, races, and brand new games we created. Homemade games like Oklahoma hockey, punt ball, X-treme Tic Tac Toe, Lutherball, and The Stupidest Race allowed us to exercise our creativity and practice team building. Many of the students who came to Jamboree are now on the leadership team for next year, and the time they spent in the lounge will only strengthen their team dynamic.
-Amanda Taylor On one Saturday in August we gathered in the LCM Lounge and drove to Lake Hartwell for our annual lake outing. We spent the afternoon swimming, lounging, and eating to celebrate the start of the fall semester. I enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new students for the first time, chatting about stories from the summer and looking forward to new experiences for the year. After several hours of boating and floating we headed back to the church, ready to start the first full week of classes. The lake outing was a great way to build community through fellowship, and to have fun!
-Tom Birdsong On August 31st, LCM went on our annual tubing trip in Helen Georgia. We went down on a Saturday morning and went on a 2 hour tubing trip down the Chattahoochie River. The water was a little low, but it was cool, and we had great weather and a great time floating down the river. Once we got back to Helen we went and got ice cream and explored the town. Some of us went and got some bugs to eat from a hot sauce store, although most people didn't try them. It was also a great trip because it was Pastor Josh's first trip with LCM! It was a good time to get to know him better, and have a great day trip all together!
-Daniel Koon God's work our hands is a great way to start off the semester for LCM! This happens every year near the beginning of classes. This time of service is a great way for LCM students and UniLu congregation members to enjoy fellowship together while doing some good. This year we had quite a few things going on. As per usual, a group went out to Abernathy Park and picked up litter from the area. Those who stayed inside had the option to string surgical caps for the children's hospital, paint hope globes, also for the childrens hospital, and create personal hygiene care packages for the less fortunate. This made for a great and productive Sunday afternoon!
-Michael Cook If it's a Tuesday night and it's around 8pm, a group of LCM students is probably in line at Starbucks on campus. Here we gather to share the high and low moments of our weeks, as we sip our favorite coffee drinks. We also share and discuss a devotion, with topics ranging from what it means to be a part of this church, to how we each experience God in our lives. Affectionately known as "Starbucks Squad", this hour has become a time to take a break, to check in with friends, and to enjoy Christian discussion and fellowship. I know I always look forward to the conversations, snacks, insights, and laughs we share, and I am thankful for this time spent together each week.
