On the first weekend of every month, the 8 campus ministries that are members of the Clemson Pastor's Association gather to work on a service project. We sacrifice an hour of our Friday night and our Saturday morning in order to make a lunch for people who might otherwise have nothing else to eat. This meal we create has a very special requirement: it must be something that we ourselves would look forward to sitting down and eating. We do not give meals made of cast-offs or too-old-to-sell donations. Rather, the host ministry is responsible for purchasing quality bread, meat, and cheese. On the following Saturday morning, students drive up to Greenville to hand out the lunches at the Southern Side Community Center.
For the month of March, the LCMers had the almost exclusive pleasure of being able to witness the gratitude the people of the Southern Side Community Center had for their meal. Due to a very unlucky set of circumstances, nearly all of the other campus ministries had scheduled retreats or events on this particular weekend; however, the Lutherans rallied to the call. With help from multiple LCMers and support from several Uni-Lu congregation members, the sandwiches were made and the lunches were packed without a hitch. We can definitely say that the Lutherans pulled their weight. Elliott Mappus |
