On Friday, September 23, a cardboard box city was created in Gateway Park to raise awareness for homelessness in our communities. Led by Family Promise of Pickens County, community members came and brought decorated boxes to the park, with many spending the night in them. A chicken noodle soup dinner was provided to all in attendance. In addition to the dinner, multiple local bands performed, and a member of Family Promise of Pickens County spoke to the audience about homelessness in our communities. The speech also addressed the method that Family Promise uses to help homeless families, by having churches trade off hosting the families in their buildings, and helping the families get back on their feet by trying to find them jobs.
Overall, it was a great event, and had a large contribution from a middle school class, who had a field trip to the event and made their own boxes for it, These middle school students also used the opportunity to introduce another event, Socktober, where people are encouraged to bring new pairs of socks to Gettys Middle School that will go to the homeless. -David Hilty Comments are closed.
