LCM took another Fall Retreat to Camp Chatuga this past semester, and we had lots of fun! The weekend's activities included basketball, soccer, watching the Clemson vs. Syracuse football game, a trip to King's Creek Falls for a hike, and the legendary Chatugaball. We lit a bonfire after the game and cooked some smores, and also had a great time reflecting on the peace and quiet of the weekend and engaging in Bible studies. All ten of us in attendance had a lot of fun, and we can't wait to do it again!
-Zach Lindler Sunday October 27th, 2019 we had our annual hayride at Rick and Cindy Sanders' farm. We dined on burgers and hotdogs and many many delicious desserts. Spikeball and cornhoe were the games of choice of this event. Everybody enjoyed the actual hayride itself. It was great to see more of the congregation outside of church.
-David Cook Every Monday night, a handful of students come together in the LCM lounge to be as spontaneous as possible. Throughout this semester, our activities have ranged from chocolate milk tasting, races, and brand new games we created. Homemade games like Oklahoma hockey, punt ball, X-treme Tic Tac Toe, Lutherball, and The Stupidest Race allowed us to exercise our creativity and practice team building. Many of the students who came to Jamboree are now on the leadership team for next year, and the time they spent in the lounge will only strengthen their team dynamic.
-Amanda Taylor On one Saturday in August we gathered in the LCM Lounge and drove to Lake Hartwell for our annual lake outing. We spent the afternoon swimming, lounging, and eating to celebrate the start of the fall semester. I enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new students for the first time, chatting about stories from the summer and looking forward to new experiences for the year. After several hours of boating and floating we headed back to the church, ready to start the first full week of classes. The lake outing was a great way to build community through fellowship, and to have fun!
-Tom Birdsong On August 31st, LCM went on our annual tubing trip in Helen Georgia. We went down on a Saturday morning and went on a 2 hour tubing trip down the Chattahoochie River. The water was a little low, but it was cool, and we had great weather and a great time floating down the river. Once we got back to Helen we went and got ice cream and explored the town. Some of us went and got some bugs to eat from a hot sauce store, although most people didn't try them. It was also a great trip because it was Pastor Josh's first trip with LCM! It was a good time to get to know him better, and have a great day trip all together!
-Daniel Koon God's work our hands is a great way to start off the semester for LCM! This happens every year near the beginning of classes. This time of service is a great way for LCM students and UniLu congregation members to enjoy fellowship together while doing some good. This year we had quite a few things going on. As per usual, a group went out to Abernathy Park and picked up litter from the area. Those who stayed inside had the option to string surgical caps for the children's hospital, paint hope globes, also for the childrens hospital, and create personal hygiene care packages for the less fortunate. This made for a great and productive Sunday afternoon!
-Michael Cook If it's a Tuesday night and it's around 8pm, a group of LCM students is probably in line at Starbucks on campus. Here we gather to share the high and low moments of our weeks, as we sip our favorite coffee drinks. We also share and discuss a devotion, with topics ranging from what it means to be a part of this church, to how we each experience God in our lives. Affectionately known as "Starbucks Squad", this hour has become a time to take a break, to check in with friends, and to enjoy Christian discussion and fellowship. I know I always look forward to the conversations, snacks, insights, and laughs we share, and I am thankful for this time spent together each week.
-Rebecca Suhr We meet every day during finals week each semester to eat lunch together and play an extended game of Phase 10, a card game. We're thankful to supplement our lunch with fruit and goodies from members of the congregation! This year, Pastor Chris won Phase 10 for what he believes is the first time ever. Seeing our friends at church is a great way to take a break from studying for exams.
-Sam Mixon John 3:16, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
As a child, we have all been asked at one point or another, what do we want to be when we grow up? To no surprise some of our answers where fantasizing such to be a princess or pirate yet some had a more realistic touch such as wanting to be a doctor. The possibilities are endless for many us living the American dream. We have that opportunity to educate ourselves at the exceptional school, have food placed in our hands by the push of a button, and even have luxury of having our own modes of transportation. These are just a few examples of things we don't think about as we become so accustomed to them being in our daily routines. Sadly, people around the world don't get to have these luxuries. Growing up in a third world country, I have seen the harsh realities many face just to make a living. I’ve learned that what you wear, even where you went to school honestly did not matter. Reality was that for some, school wasn’t an option, clothing may be the same shirt you have worn all week and had to hand wash in the river to get clean. This I would have to say is where my calling began. After hearing about the Young Adult Global Mission program, I felt that this is where I will put my calling into action. I have been blessed with an education where I have developed skills and talent, and I think the best thing I can do with them, is to share them YAGM with others that can not acquire them themselves. -Gabriela Vedders The weekend of April 13th, the leadership team went down to Camp Kinard in Batesburg Leesville. We planned out upcoming events for fall of 2019, talked about the upcoming transition with a new pastor, and reflected on the year talking about what we did well and what didn't do well. The weekend was very successful and we got to have some fellowship time with PC. We also got to eat at Shealy's BBQ, which if you haven't been there, you gotta go.
