The Fall Retreat was a fun weekend full of movies, music, and fellowship. There was some thought provoking discussion about our theme “God in the Movies”. We discussed “The Mission”, PC’s personal favorite, and “The Invention of Lying”, a more lighthearted film that had some deep underlying themes. Discussing the movies really challenged us to see our faith and church community from different perspectives. Thanks to PC, I’m sure I can find God in pretty much any movie I watch. We had the run of Camp Chatuga, and we sure did take advantage of it. There was everything from tree climbing to a spades tournament. Thanks to some last minute cable hook-ups in the dining hall by our host Rick we were able to cheer our Tigers onto a win against Boston College! On Saturday night we had a bonfire. I can’t think of a better way to spend a night than eating too many s’mores, listening to our personal string band, and laughing at silly ghost stories around the campfire. A lakeside worship service was the fitting finale. I’m sure the bugs enjoyed it almost as much as we did! I truly enjoyed spending time with my friends, new and old, on the retreat. This trip made me so very excited for the rest of the year in LCM! Callie Heyne On October 7th, 2012 I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the annual CROP walk in Clemson, which is a joint effort by all the churches in downtown Clemson and possibly some other organizations to raise money and awareness for hunger. It was a nice leisurely stroll across campus, with some great company and for a great cause. There were several LCMers and members of our church, and many from the other churches so it was a good chance to socialize with the other CROP walkers. It was also a nice study break as the semester was beginning to kick into gear, and a time to just forget about classes and enjoy the sights around campus. Kyle Edge At our first LCM Wednesday night dinner of the semester we shared the Opening Eucharist. Plenty of new students who received cookies from Cookie Drop telling them about LCM or talked to LCM members at the Organizations Fair attended the first Wednesday night dinner. It was wonderful to have all the returning students get back together and also to meet new students, welcoming them to Clemson University and UniLu. But this first gathering of the semester was not primarily a social event. The program after dinner was our Opening Eucharist, our first worship service together of the new semester. New and returning students alike participated in the small worship service led by Pastor Chris and took Communion. It is so important to remember that our UniLu community is not only a social circle that we can enjoy getting away from school work with, but it is a faith community – a church family away from our home churches. Beginning the semester LCM activities with sharing the Word of God and taking holy sacrament brings us together not only as Clemson students but as Christians - Lutherans and all other denominations alike. Being a part of Lutheran Campus Ministry the past two years has helped me grow in my faith and my relationship with God. That is due in large part to having wonderful people like Pastor Chris, Pastor Danielle and Pastor Larry, all my fellow students, and the UniLu congregation members nurture my faith and help me explore the questions I have about my faith. I’m thankful for the times we can worship together at UniLu and LCM, and the Opening Eucharist is the start to a new year of these experiences. Emily Todd Game Night was the first Friday students were back at school. We all met in the lounge and played games for a few hours. It sounds so simple yet it was a great way to meet people. Playing games is a great way to get to know people and see if they are really competitive or loud or possibly both. I learned how to play Mad Gab and I also learned I’m not very good at Mad Gab. From a freshman point of view, Game Night was a fun and relaxed way to meet people and have fun. It made it even more fun when I saw the same people again at the lake outing and already had talked to them. Emily Arnson Sunday September 16, University Lutheran put on its annual Low Country Boil. It was an exciting and fun event where students and members of the congregation alike got together, talked, prepared and ate an amazing meal of shrimp, corn, potatoes and whatever else Pastor Chris managed to sneak in the pot! It really was an amazing opportunity for students like us to get to know those involved with University Lutheran who do so much for us throughout our time here. The food and camaraderie truly helped me appreciate them on a different level as I am sure it did for all those who attended. We students would like to thank those who donated time and money, so we could enjoy a delicious meal and one another’s company! Alex Campbell We could not have asked for a better day for the lake outing. Everyone enjoyed a dip in the lake on this warm, sunny day. For the more adventurous, there was paddle boating and PC’s game of basketwater-poloball. After all the swimming and activities, we all enjoyed a scrumptious meal of hotdogs, watermelon, baked beans, Mrs.Carol’s homemade chocolate chip cookies, and more. Some of us even took advantage of the opportunity to gaze at all of Mr.Herm’s gadgets. Thank you to Mr. Herm and Mrs.Carol for having us over to enjoy a fun day on the lake with great food and fellowship. Suzy Sharpe |
